Christian Keuschnigg

24. September 2025 — SIP Talks

In this SIP Talk, Christian Keuschnigg examines how financing affects the innovation rate and the growth of start-ups.

We propose a model of business turnover with venture capital and bank financing of start-ups. Only the most innovative start-ups opt for costly VC financing to scale up R&D. Less productive firms prefer exclusive bank financing and operate on a smaller scale. Manufacturing firms acquire patents from the start-up sector to establish new product lines. They choose management intensity and thereby determine an endogenous exit rate. Three frictions distort innovation based growth. Monopolistic rents lead to a too low exit rate. Knowledge spillovers slow down the introduction of new product lines. Spillovers among start-ups result in too small a share of highly innovative VC backed start-ups. Optimal policy accelerates creative destruction by raising both entry and exit rates and induces a higher share of radical start-up innovators. We calibrate the model to quantify the policy effects.
